Monthly Phases
Full Moon
April 1st: 12th degree Libra
The Libra Full Moon is one of the most important phases on the face of the Earth. Reason being, it determines Easter Sunday. That’s right, every year, the first Sunday after the first Full Moon after the spring equinox Christian’s celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Alleluia! He has risen!!! Church goers aren’t the only people with spiritual festivities though. Many cultures throughout the world honor this time of year. Some call it Ishtar, I call it Ostara, and often wonder what kind of indigenous observations have been lost through time or destroyed by oppression. Like, what the heck were the ancient Mayans or Egyptians doing 3000 years ago? I’m guessing they were tending to their fields and flocks or cleaning out their grain bins. Whatever you observe, it’s the changing of the seasons and everyone is transforming. New things are beginning while others are coming to an end. Another of my wonders is what goes on down under during the spring equinox. While I’m getting ready to start my garden, it's fall for all in Australia and most of South America. First and foremost, I use this Full Moon to remember my successes and failures of last year. Make a list of what went well and what didn’t turn out so much. You’ll get a better harvest if you acknowledge some things will need to change. Next, figure out how much space and resources are available. How is the soil? How is the structure of the beds? How is everything going to come together so the next equinox can be plentiful? Invest your energy into phases one, two, and three. Four, five, and six can come along during the next Full Moon.
Unconsciously you’re realizing the need for balance, peace, and harmony. Although I usually say the Full Moon is similar to the high tide, I compare this one with the slack tide. Even though you can be aroused emotionally, the water around you is calm and going neither in nor out until the Moon shifts and the tidal change is noticed. One of the biggest problems with Libra and its ruling planet Venus is indecisiveness. The cardinal air sign might be good at leadership, but it doesn't like making quick decisions and will always wonder what if they had chosen path A or B instead of path C. Make your choice steadfast and focus on the tasks directly ahead. If something doesn’t individually affect you, imagine it’s a butterfly, and let it flutter by. If you like to read, there’s a wonderful book out there called Think and Grow Rich. It taught me the philosophy that actions filled with emotion produce greater results than actions without. Ask any construction guy how much more you get done when you’re all wound up. It also taught me the number one reason for failure was the lack of a definitive goal or intent. You can’t get what you want if you don’t know what you want and the main purpose of this alignment is to inspire both. Come up with an independent achievement you can reasonably accomplish and ponder the process of how to get it done. Then, go out there and get it done. My favorite thing to do is decide what seeds I want to start for the summer. Be very careful though. It’s really convenient to just sit around and think stuff up. Actually getting it accomplished is another story. The phrase “Easier said than done” can definitely apply to this phase.
New Moon
April 17th: 27th degree Aries
As an Aries myself, I’m included when I say it’s our own ego that doesn’t want to admit when we’re the one causing the problems or dysfunction. Honestly evaluating yourself is one of the most difficult things you can do and few actually try it. Every New Moon is meant for new beginnings. New beginnings start with inner reflection and spiritual growth. I’m nothing close to a trained counselor, but if you ever come to me for advice the first two things I ask are,”What are you independently doing to solve this problem?” Followed by, “What is your direct desire for the project, product, or goal to end up like?” Most people, including myself again, pucker up and can’t give a single explanation of how they’ve gotten something done. They'll give ten reasons why everything fell apart, or how it was “someone else’s” fault with no sense of independent accountability. After those responses many say, “Well, I just don’t know what I want.” I’ll always tell you recognizing what you want is the most important step in any process. The essence of this new Moon is for you to recognize these issues and spark the inspiration for a change. Much like the first step in Alcoholics Anonymous. You identify you have a problem and want to make a change. Whether that change is large or small, use this lunation to set your intent. Get the thought planted into your subconscious mind and the physical body will eventually follow. Most importantly, try not to get so distracted by what might happen in three days that you neglect proper procedures today. It’s like when someone puts wrong numbers in a set of blueprints. The builder simply follows instructions with the info provided and the mistake isn’t realized until it’s a costly repair. Now the project is five steps in and you have to take three steps back.
My best suggestion for this alignment is to find an incomplete project you started a while ago and get back to work on that. Steps one, two, and three, are usually more exciting than steps four, five, and six and I’m sure there’s something you gave up that needs completion. Even if you lost your interest years ago, it’s never too late to restart. Or, something you can begin and complete in an extremely short amount of time. Aries is known for inspiration but that can only last so long. Your first cup of coffee eventually wears off and you’ll need another jolt later down the line. Sometimes, that jolt is an extreme emotional arousal that stems from an argument or significant struggle. I know I get a lot more done when I get all pissed off. Aries is also known for being impatient and disruptive as well. The Romans named Aries as the God of war for a reason and this sign generally won’t back down from a fight. Don’t be surprised if you’re the one initiating or instigating all the arguments and drama. Remember, not everyone around you is going to be receptive to your ego or ideas. You’ll have to manage each accordingly. Sometimes the sudden influx of energy and emotions can be like switching on the power without a surge protector. You might be highly charged to do something, but if you have no direction nothing everything kinda explodes at the end. Instances like that occur because Aries is a full throttle sign that will charge into something without hesitation or thinking things through.
